Mission & Objectives

MISSION:
The Department of Physics will provide highly competitive graduate and undergraduate education in physics, in order to produce able and capable physicists who are trained in the art of critical thinking, problem solving, independent learning and practical skills to meet the technical and scientific challenges in state and federal government, industry and academia and the growing demands of interdisciplinary research.

VISION:
The Department of Physics will become a recognized leader, and the number one producer of African American physicists in the nation and will play a central and critical role in building an Interdisciplinary University and the use of technology in education.

GOALS:
The goals to satisfy the mission and realize the vision for the Department of Physics are:

1. Maintain high standard accompanied by a rigorous curriculum that is aligned with the standards.

2. Provide a high level instruction and provide student support to maintain the high level of instruction.

3. Provide resources and opportunities for faculty to enhance teaching, research and skills to be able to maintain a high level instruction meeting the high standards.

4. Develop the research infrastructure in the department, in order to provide state-of-the-art research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in an effort to exploit the excitement of physics research to enhance the recruitment and retention of minorities in physics.

5. Continuously evaluate the program, course standards, and syllabus and make changes whenever appropriate.

6. Develop interdisciplinary research collaborations with other departments on campus and develop interdisciplinary courses to provide interdisciplinary training to our students.

7. Strengthen existing collaborations with other institutions and national laboratories and develop new ones to be able to provide more research opportunities to students and faculty.

8. Make sure that our department turns out graduates trained to apply their skills to today’s industrial needs, and supports our industries that depend on technically educated workers so that they can produce products with competitive market place advantage.
