Proposal to conduct the 1st International USAFAS Conference on Physics of Materials and Material ScienceI. Conference ObjectivesNovel electronic materials play an ever-increasing role in technological applications. They cover a rather broad spectrum of materials: high temperature superconductors (HTS), narrow band gap semiconductors, electronically active polymers, giant magnetoresistive systems, nanoscale electronic materials, and Fullerenes, to name a few. The applications of these materials, both real and anticipated, are also quite diverse, encompassing infrared detectors, refrigeration, LED's, magnetic storage, and quantum computing. Understanding the connection between the novel characteristics of these materials being exploited for applications and the underlying electronic interactions is at the forefront of current research activities in the field of strongly-correlated electronic materials. In particular, understanding the interplay between strong electronic correlations ions and structural properties of these materials is crucial for developing predictive capabilities for device characteristics. Understanding the underlying physics and chemistry of these novel electronic materials, and pointing the way to new technological applications, is at the heart of the conference.II. Conference formatThe conference will be organized in four sections comprising of invited presentation, panel discussions, contributed paper presentations, and workshops.(a) Invited talks Selected and invited experts shall present keynote addresses as a prelude to the conference theme. Each key not presenter shall address immediate and long-term educational goals. The experts shall be selected from academia, industry and government agencies. (b) Panel Discussion: Panel discussion from selected and invited experts shall be organized around three conference areas. The panel discussions shall serve as a precursor to paper presentations (c) paper presentations: Reviewed paper presentations shall be organized around the three conference themes (d) Workshops: Two workshop tracks shall be organized as follows (i) Graduate and Undergraduate student workshop on scientific
topics related to the mail conference: A full day workshop presented by
at least two experts for undergraduate and graduate students who are inclined
to obtain PhD in these areas
III. Location and probable datesThe conference shall be held every year during the first week of June. Location to be determinedIV. Methods of announcement and invitationConference announcement shall be posted on the a USAFAS website. Announcements shall also be advertised in major international professional societies and organizations internet bulletin boards and newsletters. We will target those organizations interested in scientific research and education in Africa. In addition emails and regular will be sent out to all major universities in Africa. Letters of invitation shall be sent to distinguished scientists in fundamental and applied sciences. The conference planning committee shall suggest, recommend and approve the names of all invited speakers. The funding agency shall have the option of selecting the scientists who will provide the opening remarks about the conference.V. Tentative list of participantsTo be determinedVI. Proposed budget: A total of $50,000 per yearVII. Conference OutcomesThe expected outcomes shall include(a) A published conference proceeding (b) Selected high quality conference papers to be published in an edited book volume (c) Summary of conference group discussions (d) A possible interest group formation of Africa Physics of Materials and Material Science (e) Web-site for USAFAS VIII. Conference follow up and evaluationConference attendees shall evaluate the conference in terms of (a) management (b) technical contents (c) panel and workshop discussion. The summarized evaluation data shall be used to plan future conferences |
