The map shows all the various kingdoms of ethiopia as well as the topography, rivers, towns and the red sea. the great venetian cartorapher coronelli based his map with information from previous mapmakers mendez, almeida, pais, lobo and lodulfo. the name Abissinia is on the lower right surrounded by decorative laurel and a shield. On the lower shield is a decorative insignia in italian "vicit leo de tribujuda insignia regis regum aethiopia"(conquring lion of the tribe of Judah and kings of kings of ethiopia). the various kingdoms of the empire are refered to as regnos. thus there is regno di shoa, di Gojiam, di Cafate (Kaffa), di Ganz , di Dembea (north of Lake Tana), Tigre, di Amhara (welo), Ifat, Guraghe, Damot, Balli, Dawaro, Sugamo (Sidamo?), Angot, Bagemder and Midrabahr ( Bahrmedr) and several other kingdoms. familiar towns shown are Asmara, Arkiko and Mistiwa on the mar Rosso (red sea) coast and interestingly he refers to arkiko as "Arkiko Porto degli Abissini occupato da Turchi (port of arkiko of the abyssinians occupied by the turks), Debre Libanos, Ambasel, Axum, Adwa and several church towns. interestingly gonder is not shown but on the northwestern part of Lake Tana (Tzana or Dembea) are two large tents designated as campo del re (camp of the king). the Oromo population (Galla popoli) are located around lake zwai, ifat, east of Enderta province and north of damot. the afar region is described as regno di Dancali. Coronelli describes the Afars as "il di cui re benche maomattano e amicco di quello dell'abissinia". there are several other historical events and geographical descriptions including an "origin and course of the nile" map from lake zaire (victoria) to the nile delta on the upper right side of the map of Ethiopia. This is a good map for history buffs as well as for politicians and geographers to debate over.
