One of my third grade students, a black boy, after watching the shuttle lift off with John Glen aboard, wrote in his jounal that going into space was for white people. This really bothered me so I found the Ron McNair Scholars Program web site on the internet. I printed it out and read the story to the kids. They couldn't believe it. We also found out that there have been quite a few black astronauts- even a woman. Our kids here who are mostly black and at considered at risk need to know about minorities like Mc Nair who have been successful in the science and math areas. We would like to know more about him and where he came from.
